The increased metabolism and substantial effort of the pigeon during flight produce many waste products. The elimination of urea, uric and phosphoric acid, lactic and carbonic acid mainly leads to the consumption of sodium ions. The elimination therefore depends on the amount of these ions available to the pigeon. Flight also causes significant water loss.
