The hygiene and health of birds depend on humidity and pH!

Moisture and acidity favor the development of parasites (red lice - Dermanyssus gallinae).

In the unanimous opinion of breeders, the red louse (Dermanyssus gallinae) is today the most harmful external parasite of aviaries, dovecotes and chicken coops. Whether ornamental birds, small farms of passionate amateurs or professional breeding of laying hens, pheasants or quail, it is very rare not to have been contaminated by this parasite.

It is considered that 70 to 80% of professional laying hen farms are affected more or less severely. The consequence is a considerable decrease in laying and even death by exhaustion of hens in the most severe cases.

Unfortunately, no bird is ever completely safe from red lice. They can be introduced into the cage, aviary or chicken coop by a newcomer, by a new object, and even... by the breeder himself. The red louse can stay temporarily on humans and even on other mammals such as rats or dogs! However, it seems that this parasite is rarely brought by wild birds (for example by a nest of sparrows or pigeons nearby), because studies by ITAVI (Sophie Lubac, one of the leading specialists in France) have shown that the strains are different.

A formidable enemy

Amateur bird breeders (chickens, pigeons, serins, parakeets ...) also very often encounter this parasite. And it is very difficult to get rid of it. The red louse is a 0.5 mm to 1 mm long mite called an intermittent ectoparasite, which means that it does not live permanently on its host and only "visits" it for food. Red lice commute up to 8 to 10 times a day between their refuge (any possible crevice, space between two plates, crack in the wood, gap between two boards, at an angle of the construction ...) and its victim. They will only stay on the bird for one to two hours to gorge themselves with blood, which will change their color from gray to bright red, and later to dark red almost black when digestion is complete. The nuisances of the red louse do not stop there: it is now established that the bites transmit many pathologies via the blood ... And even when an aviary or chicken coop affected by an epidemic is emptied and cleaned, it is enough for red lice to come out of hiding after the introduction of new birds, for them to be contaminated by the germs of the birds that preceded them!

The red louse reproduces very quickly: a female can lay 100 to 200 eggs per week, and the complete cycle (from the laying of the egg, then to its hatching and until the state of reproductive adult) may not exceed one week under favorable temperature and humidity conditions. In addition to this, it is also exceptionally resistant: if the temperature and humidity drop, or if food is lacking, red lice can "hibernate" for up to 8 months without feeding. They are even able to survive by taking the necessary proteins from droppings, feathers and dust.

The picture is almost complete: the enemy is formidable, it will be necessary to arm oneself with courage and patience!

How to detect the presence of red lice on your birds?

If you notice these symptoms:

Are your birds wasting away and looking exhausted?

An unusual mortality affects your broods?

Do eggs have small red spots?

So, it is likely that your farm is infested.

But to be sure, do this simple test:

Hang a piece of paper towel or a white cloth in a ball near the birds... Wait a few days and unfold it. If there are pests in your farm, they will have settled in priority in the folds.

But nothing is lost... Some prevention rules make it possible to avoid this scourge, and to treat it when one is unfortunately afflicted with it. The following tips will help you take stock and build your battle plan!

Properly control the humidity and pH of the barn, cage or aviary

A new concept: Bi-Poux mineral powder. Bicarbonate regulates pH and silica traps moisture.

Our Bi-Lice® mineral powders trap moisture and regulate pH without harming birds or breeders. They do not contain neurotoxic insecticides.  Their effectiveness is therefore constant over time.

They dry up the environment. Our laboratory tests clearly show this... These are the most effective mineral powders available today. They have been the subject of several international patents.

Their effectiveness will depend on the quality of their application and the cleanliness of the supports. Whatever the treatment product, you should know that dust, feathers and droppings are the allies of parasites and bacteria... Surfaces must therefore be as clean as possible.

How to apply this mineral powder?

Here's what you'll need to do as soon as you receive your Bi-Lice®:

It is necessary to start from the healthiest possible situation: completely empty the cage, aviary or chicken coop, carefully dispose of straw or litter (the ideal is to burn it if possible). Remove all dust and do not hesitate to wash with water with the addition of liquid soap (black soap - also available on this site - is very effective).

On horizontal surfaces and in nests: apply the powdered product, distributing it as evenly as possible. You can use a sieve for small areas, and a mechanical powder machine for large aviaries or large chicken coops. If you use newspaper, apply powder UNDER and ON the newspaper. If you use straw, litter or sand, sprinkle well on top. It is not necessary to use large quantities of Bi-Lice®, but to distribute it as evenly as possible.

On vertical surfaces, walls, cage elements, etc. : make a solution by mixing 200 grams of powder with 1 liter of warm water (it is important to obtain after mixing a fluid and lump-free consistency), then spray on all surfaces in a light uniform veil (the product should if possible not drip after application). Insist in cracks and corners. The product becomes active after drying.

Regular monitoring will then be ensured to make a new application of powder as soon as possible, if you notice the presence of red lice again (remember to use the trick of white paper or cloth).

In prevention:

To protect your farm from moisture and to regulate its pH, a systematic application of powder at each cleaning of your aviary or chicken coop gives excellent results. Because Bi-Lice® is safe and non-toxic, its use is safe for your birds and yourself. The powder remains effective as long as it is not covered with a layer of dust.

An effective and safe alternative.

Millions of birds have already benefited from hygiene "Bi-Lice"

Many testimonials from breeders of small birds (serins, parakeets ...) or larger birds (pigeons, chickens, pheasants and other gallinaceans) on blogs and forums of breeders attest to the effectiveness of the product.

It is the only product in its category "bicarbonate + silica" regularly used by poultry professionals. More than 10 million laying hens have already benefited from improved hygiene conditions in this way.

Safety of the amateur breeder and animals

Bi-Lice® combines the properties of sodium bicarbonate, which has long been found to be safe, with a very specific quality of amorphous precipitated silica (completely free of crystalline silica)

These components do not present any danger to humans or animals in case of accidental ingestion, nor risk of silicosis, under normal conditions of use.

Bi-Lice® can be applied directly to the nest to protect the chicks from their colosion. It fully preserves the reproductive potential of show birds.

Bi-Lice® is not a preparation classified as 'dangerous' according to Directive 1999/45/EC. Its composition was registered on August 8, 2006 by the INRS (Institut National de Recherche et de Sécurité) under nº 93281.

Nevertheless, as in the use of all powders, we recommend that you protect your eyes with safety glasses and wear a dust mask.

A Certified Product for use in organic farms

Bi-Lice is a "Product usable in Organic Agriculture in application of RCE No. 834/2007" and certified by the Ecocert organization (in its version in bags of 20 kg under the name Bi-Protec®), Bi-Lice®® is perfectly usable for organic farms.

In addition, your eggs can be eaten without restriction even immediately after application of Bi-Lice® in your aviaries or chicken coops. You are not taking any risks for your birds or for yourself.
